The <em>additivity<\/em> here is a <em>generalization<\/em> of arithmetic addivity &mdash; which generalization, with other assumptions, will imply the arithmetic case.<\/p> <p>The classic formulation of this principle came from Bruno di Finetti.  Di Finetti was a <span style=\"font-style: italic ;\">subjectivist<\/span>.  A typical <span style=\"font-style: italic ;\">subjectivist<\/span> is amongst those who prefer to think in terms of the probability of <em>events<\/em>, rather than in terms of the probability of <em>propositions<\/em>.  And subjectivists like to <em>found<\/em> their theory of probability in terms of <em>unconditional<\/em> probabilities.  Using somewhat different notation from that here, the classic formulation of the principle of <span style=\"font-style: italic ;\">additivity<\/span> is <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/additivity.png\" width=\"346\" height=\"111\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block ; border: none ; margin-top: 0 ; margin-bottom: 0.5em ; margin-left: auto ; margin-right: auto ; max-width: 100% ; max-height: 33vw ;\" \/> in which <var>X<\/var>, <var>Y<\/var>, and <var>Z<\/var> are sets of events.  The underscored arrowhead is again my notation for <span style=\"font-style: italic ;\">weak supraprobability<\/span>, the union of <span style=\"font-style: italic ;\">strict supraprobability<\/span> with <span style=\"font-style: italic ;\">equiprobability<\/span>.<\/p> <p>One of the things that I noticed when considering this proposition is that the condition that <span style=\"white-space: nowrap ;\"><var>Y<\/var>&#8745;<var>Z<\/var><\/span> be empty is superfluous.  I tried to get a note published on that issue, but journals were not receptive.  I had bigger fish to fry other than that one, so I threw-up my hands and moved onward.<\/p> <p>When it comes to probability, I'm a <span style=\"font-style: italic ;\">logicist<\/span>.  I see probability as primarily about relations amongst <em>propositions<\/em> (though every event corresponds to a proposition that the event happen and every proposition corresponds to the event that the proposition is true), and I see each thing about which we state a probability as a compound proposition of the form <span style=\"display: block ; margin-top: 0.5em ; margin-bottom: 0.5em ; text-align: center ;\"><var>X<\/var> given <var>c<\/var><\/span> in which <var>X<\/var> and <var>c<\/var> are themselves propositions (though if <var>c<\/var> is a tautology, then the proposition operationalizes as <em>unconditional<\/em>).  I've long pondered what would be a proper <em>generalized<\/em> restatement of the principle of <span style=\"font-style: italic ;\">additivity<\/span>.  If you've looked at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.praxiologic.com\/economics\/papers\/axiomata.pdf\">the set of axiomata on which I've been working<\/a>, then you've seen one or more of my efforts.  Last night, I clearly saw what I think to be the proper statement: <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/additivity_generalized.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"156\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block ; border: none ; margin-top: 0 ; margin-bottom: 0.5em ; margin-left: auto ; margin-right: auto ; max-width: 100% ; max-height: 35vw ;\" \/> To get di Finetti's principle from it, set <span style=\"white-space: nowrap ;\"><var>c<sub>2<\/sub> = <\/var><var>c<\/var><sub>1<\/sub><\/span> and make it a tautology, and set <span style=\"white-space: nowrap ;\"><var>X<sub>2<\/sub> = Z = <\/var><var>Y<\/var><sub>2<\/sub><\/span>.  Note that the condition of (<var>X<sub>2<\/sub>&#160;|&#160;<\/var><var>c<\/var><sub>1<\/sub>) being weakly supraprobable to (<var>Y<sub>2<\/sub>&#160;|&#160;<\/var><var>c<\/var><sub>2<\/sub>) is automatically met when the two are the same thing.  By itself, this generalization implies my previous generalization and part of another principle that I was treating as an axiom; the remainder of that other principle can be got by applying basic properties of equiprobability and the principle that strict supraprobability and equiprobability are mutually exclusive to this generalization.
