{"id":6358,"date":"2014-01-14T19:34:28","date_gmt":"2014-01-15T03:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=6358"},"modified":"2014-01-14T21:02:34","modified_gmt":"2014-01-15T05:02:34","slug":"non-violent-neutrality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=6358","title":{"rendered":"Non-Violent Neutrality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don't know that 'Net-neutrality were, in fact, a good thing; but, even on the assumption that it were, state action is not the <em>proper<\/em> way to promote it.<\/p> <p>'Net-neutrality can be promoted by how people do business with <abbr title=\"Internet Service Provider\" style=\"font-size: inherit ;\">ISP<\/abbr>s.  At one end, subscribers can consistently migrate towards those <abbr title=\"Internet Service Provider\" style=\"font-size: inherit ;\">ISP<\/abbr>s who deviate least from neutrality.  At the other end, website owners can <em>impede access<\/em> by <abbr title=\"Internet Service Provider\" style=\"font-size: inherit ;\">ISP<\/abbr>s that do not practice an acceptable degree of neutrality.<\/p> <p>In fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\">Google<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\">Facebook<\/a> could effectively <em>impose<\/em> neutrality by announcing that, in one year, they would begin <em>blocking<\/em> access by providers who did not make pledges, renewed annually but each extending for ten years, to practice 'Net-neutrality.  It might, however, require state <em>in<\/em>action for these heavy-hitters to make such a demand.
