{"id":62,"date":"2008-03-20T01:41:17","date_gmt":"2008-03-20T09:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=62"},"modified":"2020-11-26T04:06:12","modified_gmt":"2020-11-26T12:06:12","slug":"between-the-lines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=62","title":{"rendered":"Between the Lines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/lj_2008\/3846.html\">the same message that I quoted earlier<\/a>, a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/\">LiveJournal<\/a> staff writes<\/p> <blockquote>Open questions <ul><span style=\"font-style: italic\">[\u2026]<\/span> <li>Subscriptions \u2013 Should moderators be able to charge for access to closed communities?<\/li><\/ul><\/blockquote> <p>And people are responding, <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/lj_2008\/3846.html?thread=573702#t573702\">positively<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/lj_2008\/3846.html?thread=575750#t575750\">negatively<\/a>, on the interpretation that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/\"><abbr title=\"LiveJournal\">LJ<\/abbr><\/a> is contemplating <em>adding support<\/em> for such subscriptions.<\/p> <p>What is more likely to have happened is that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/\">LiveJournal<\/a> has re\u00e4lized that nothing in their existing rules prevents a maintainer from imposing subscription fees (collected off-site) as a precondition for membership in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/\"><abbr title=\"LiveJournal\">LJ<\/abbr><\/a> community journal, and that one or more <q>cam ho<\/q> is doing just this.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/\"><abbr title=\"LiveJournal\">LJ<\/abbr><\/a> doesn't want to become known as infrastructure for sex work, but they'd probably rather not ban communities only open to dues-paying members of fraternal societies.
