{"id":4628,"date":"2011-03-16T12:03:24","date_gmt":"2011-03-16T20:03:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=4628"},"modified":"2011-03-16T12:03:24","modified_gmt":"2011-03-16T20:03:24","slug":"lyxing-the-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=4628","title":{"rendered":"LyXing the Problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last night and this morning, I used <a href=\"http:\/\/writer2latex.sourceforge.net\/\">Writer2<span style=\"letter-spacing: -1px ;\">L<span style=\"vertical-align: top; font-size: smaller ;\">A<\/span>&Tau;<span style=\"vertical-align: sub;\">&Epsilon;<\/span>&Chi;<\/span><\/a> to export the notes for my principal paper-in-progress from <abbr title=\"OpenDocument text\">ODT<\/abbr> format to a <span style=\"letter-spacing: -1px ;\">L<span style=\"vertical-align: top; font-size: smaller ;\">A<\/span>&Tau;<span style=\"vertical-align: sub;\">&Epsilon;<\/span>&Chi;<\/span> file, imported that into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyx.org\/\">LyX<\/a>, and then spent some time cleaning things.  This was in an attempt, which looks fairly successful, to overcome <a href=\"?p=4307\">the problem that I now have of OpenOffice under <abbr title=\"Red Hat Enterprise Linux\">RHEL<\/abbr> failing to render various mathematical characters<\/a>.<\/p> <p>The results for the formul&aelig; are not really <abbr title=\"what you see is what you get\">WYSIWYG<\/abbr> (nor does <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyx.org\/\">LyX<\/a> seek to offer exactly a <abbr title=\"what you see is what you get\">WYSIWYG<\/abbr> display of formul&aelig;), but they are close enough that, as I look at them, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/wprefdef.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"21\" style=\"border: 0 ; display: block ; margin-top: 1em ; margin-bottom: 1em ; margin-left: auto ; margin-right: auto ;\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/nondom_450x60.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"60\" style=\"border: 0 ; display: block ; margin-top: 1em ; margin-bottom: 1em ; margin-left: auto ; margin-right: auto ;\" \/> I don't have to spend most of my time thinking about the mark-up rather than thinking about the theoretical constructs that they are supposed to represent. (In fact, I'm one of those folk who prefers to word-process with the non-printing characters represented, and I'm quite comfortable with most of the extra stuff here in the representation of formul&aelig;.) The symbols that I want are being rendered nicely, with the notable (but not egregious) exception of <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/defeq.png\" alt=\"a symbol for definitional equality\" width=\"23\" height=\"19\" style=\"border: 0 ; display: block ; margin-top: 1em ; margin-bottom: 1em ; margin-left: auto ; margin-right: auto ;\" \/> which is presently displayed as <q><code style=\"color: #900b0b ;\">\\defeq<\/code><\/q>. (It's defined in a <span style=\"letter-spacing: -1px ;\">L<span style=\"vertical-align: top; font-size: smaller ;\">A<\/span>&Tau;<span style=\"vertical-align: sub;\">&Epsilon;<\/span>&Chi;<\/span> document preamble as <q><code>\\stackrel{\\mathrm{def}}{=}<\/code><\/q>.)<\/p> <p>I still have to learn more of my way around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyx.org\/\">LyX<\/a> but, barring some unexpected remedial action on the part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openoffice.org\/\">OpenOffice<\/a> programmers, I will probably migrate to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lyx.org\/\">LyX<\/a> for the production of technical documents.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Last night and this morning, I used Writer2LA&Tau;&Epsilon;&Chi; to export the notes for my principal paper-in-progress from ODT format to a LA&Tau;&Epsilon;&Chi; file, imported that into LyX, and then spent some time cleaning things.
