{"id":461,"date":"2008-08-15T07:34:44","date_gmt":"2008-08-15T15:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=461"},"modified":"2009-09-25T21:06:14","modified_gmt":"2009-09-26T05:06:14","slug":"the-new-lj-basic-accounts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=461","title":{"rendered":"The New <abbr title=\"LiveJournal\">LJ<\/abbr> <q>Basic<\/q> Accounts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.livejournal.com\/109461.html\">On 17 July, LiveJournal, Inc, announced the return of Basic Accounts.<\/a>  <a href=\"?p=197\">As previously noted<\/a>, what was actually happening was that <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/lj_2008\/4376.html?thread=987160#t987160\">Basic Accounts were going to be <em>replaced<\/em> with a new sort of account with the same name<\/a>.<\/p> <p><a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/lj_2008\/4979.html\">The essentials of the new programme have now been reported<\/a>: <ul><li>Journals of <q>Basic<\/q> Accounts will display advertisements to anyone not logged-in, but will not display them to those who <em>are<\/em> logged-in.<\/li><li>New <q>Basic<\/q> Accounts cannot be <em>directly<\/em> cre&auml;ted, but one can cre&auml;te new Plus Accounts, and then <q>downgrade<\/q> these to <q>Basic<\/q> accounts. (<a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/lj_2008\/4979.html\">The official report<\/a> is somewhat confusing on this matter, because it is inconsistent in its conceptualization of <q>Account<\/q>.) The objective of blocking direct cre&auml;tion seems to be to get new subscribers to try a Plus Account before trying (and often before <em>discovering<\/em>) the <q>Basic<\/q> Account.<\/li><\/ul> <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/lj_2008\/4979.html\">The report<\/a> does not discuss what happens when Permanent Account journals are viewed with <q>Basic<\/q> Accounts.  In the case of community journals where the subscription is internal (<abbr title=\"exempli gratia\" style=\"font-style: italic ;\">eg<\/abbr>: <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/lj_2008\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder ;\">lj_2008<\/span><\/a>), banner ads are shown when individual entries are viewed with Basic Accounts.  In other cases, ads are not being displayed by Permanent Account journals viewed with Basic Accounts.<\/p> <p>Based on some experiments, the advertising policy for registered external <abbr title=\"identity\">ID<\/abbr>s appear to be same as for the new <q>Basic<\/q> Accounts.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"On 17 July, LiveJournal, Inc, announced the return of Basic Accounts.
