{"id":197,"date":"2008-07-18T10:29:08","date_gmt":"2008-07-18T18:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=197"},"modified":"2020-11-26T04:08:58","modified_gmt":"2020-11-26T12:08:58","slug":"but-not-really","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=197","title":{"rendered":"\u2026but not really"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.livejournal.com\/109461.html\">LiveJournal has <em>announced<\/em> the return of Basic Accounts.<\/a>  Unfortunately, <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/lj_2008\/4376.html\">what they are <em>actually<\/em> going to do<\/a> is <ol><li>Introduce a new sort of account, with advertising, though with less than Sponsored Accounts have.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/lj_2008\/4376.html?thread=987160#t987160\">Eliminate all existing Basic Accounts, moving every user who presently has a Basic Account to this new sort of account.<\/a><\/li><li>Give the new sort of account the name <q>Basic Account<\/q>.<\/li><\/ol> For example, if one now has a Basic Account, then starting in August one's <abbr title=\"LiveJournal\">LJ<\/abbr> will probably present ads to visitors who are not logged-in. (I'll let readers know whether ads are also present to those logged-in with registered external identities.)<\/p> <p>Most of the comments that I saw to the announcement were the usual, clueless words of thanks, and I'll wager that most holders (even most <em>active<\/em> holders) of present Basic Accounts will either have missed <a href=\"http:\/\/news.livejournal.com\/109461.html\">the announcement<\/a> altogether, or simply have taken <a href=\"http:\/\/news.livejournal.com\/109461.html\">it<\/a> at face value where it says<\/p> <blockquote style=\"font-size: smaller ;\">Back by popular demand, Basic Accounts will be available to all users again by the end of the (northern hemisphere) summer.<\/blockquote> <p>There will be anger in August, when the changes are put into effect and thus discovered, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sup.com\/en\/index.html\">\u0421\u0423\u041f<\/a> will claim that users should have voiced their objections during the two-week feed-back period.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"LiveJournal has announced the return of Basic Accounts.
