{"id":1600,"date":"2009-04-20T23:02:26","date_gmt":"2009-04-21T07:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=1600"},"modified":"2010-07-16T18:05:07","modified_gmt":"2010-07-17T02:05:07","slug":"for-he-is-the-man-of-the-hidden-face","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=1600","title":{"rendered":"<q style=\"font-style: italic ;\">For he is the <strong>Man<\/strong> of the <strong>Hidden Face<\/strong>!!!<\/q>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While I'm trying to get readers to visit <a href=\"http:\/\/mydelineatedlife.blogspot.com\/\">the Pictorial Arts<\/a> I'd like to point to a specific pair of entries, <q>The Great Comic Book Heroes<\/q> <a href=\"http:\/\/mydelineatedlife.blogspot.com\/2009\/02\/great-comic-book-heroes_09.html\">part 1<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mydelineatedlife.blogspot.com\/2009\/02\/great-comic-book-heroes.html\">part 2<\/a>, from 9 February.<\/p> <p>It was in Jules Feiffer's book, <cite>The Great Comic Book Heroes<\/cite>, that Buchanan and later I first encountered an untitled story by Will Eisner earlier published in the spring of 1941. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/eisner_spirit.png\" width=\"450\" height=\"318\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block ; margin-left: auto ; margin-right: auto ;\" \/> Buchanan writes <q>It showed me what comics could be.<\/q> My re&auml;ction had been much the same.  I'd seen some awfully good comic book art before I saw this story &mdash; Steranko's three issues of <cite>Captain America<\/cite> come immediately to-mind &mdash; but I'd just never seen <em>anything<\/em> like <em>this<\/em>.  My sense of what a comic book could <em>be<\/em> was deeply changed.<\/p> <p>(Later, I found more stories by Eisner, and discovered to my great dismay that Eisner had given the character of the Spirit a black side-kick who was depicted in a profoundly racist manner.
