After all, he told us that he <q>took the initiative in creating the Internet<\/q>.<span style=\"font-size: smaller ; vertical-align: super ;\">[1]<\/span><\/p> <p><span style=\"font-weight: bolder ;\">[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bolder ; font-variant: small-caps ;\">Up-Date<\/span> (13 Jan)<span style=\"font-weight: bolder ; font-variant: small-caps ;\">:<\/span> I was informed by <a href=\"http:\/\/gaal.livejournal.com\/\">Gaal<\/a>, in <a href=\"?p=1205#comments\">a comment to this entry<\/a>, that <a href=\"www.timesonline.co.uk\/\"><cite>the Times<\/cite><\/a> had somehow fabricated this story. (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/\">The <abbr title=\"British Broadcasting Corporation\">BBC<\/abbr><\/a> presenting the story as if it were their own research, but the chances that they would have independently fabricated the same details are slim indeed.  So <a href=\"www.timesonline.co.uk\/\"><cite>the Times<\/cite><\/a> has been caught-out in one way, and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/\">the <abbr title=\"British Broadcasting Corporation\">BBC<\/abbr><\/a> in another.) Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/technology\/7823387.stm\">the <abbr title=\"British Broadcasting Corporation\">BBC<\/abbr> story<\/a> has been significantly edited, so that the sentence quoted above no longer appears, and we are instead told <blockquote style=\"font-size: smaller ;\">A recent study by American research firm Gartner suggested that IT now causes two percent of global emissions.<\/blockquote><span style=\"font-weight: bolder ;\">]<\/span><\/p> <hr width=\"50%\" align=\"left\" \/> <p><span style=\"font-size: smaller ; vertical-align: super ;\">[1]<\/span>Note that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/quotes\/internet.asp\">Snopes.com demonstrates that Al Gore did not claim to have <em>invented<\/em> the Internet<\/a>.  But what Gore <em>did<\/em> claim (and they even quote this) was<\/p> <blockquote style=\"font-size: smaller ;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/ALLPOLITICS\/stories\/1999\/03\/09\/president.2000\/transcript.gore\/index.html\">During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in <u>creating<\/u> the Internet.<\/a><\/blockquote> <p>Snopes, which can be very much about <em>spin<\/em> rather than clarity when it is <em>their<\/em> ox that is about to be, er, stabbed with a horn, wants to claim that there's room for <em>debate<\/em> about whether his claim of cre&auml;tion is justified, <q>because the Internet is not a homogenous entity<\/q> and didn't <q>spring into being at once<\/q>.
