{"id":1141,"date":"2008-12-24T14:58:25","date_gmt":"2008-12-24T22:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=1141"},"modified":"2023-01-23T01:50:11","modified_gmt":"2023-01-23T09:50:11","slug":"in-this-style-106","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=1141","title":{"rendered":"In this Style 10\/<span style=\"vertical-align: top ; font-size: smaller ;\">6<\/span>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had a brief but very pleasant conversation this morning with <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.villagehatshop.com\/\">Fred Belinsky<\/a>, owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.villagehatshop.com\/\">the Village Hat Shop<\/a>.<\/p> <p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.villagehatshop.com\/2008\/01\/finding-the-bon.html\">One of Mr Belinsky's &#39;blog entries<\/a> had been about common-sense responsiveness to customers, and I felt that if I spoke to him about a sort of hat that I'd like to buy from him, then my request would be <em>weighed<\/em> into the decisions about what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jaxonhats.com\/\">their in-house manufacturer, Jaxon Hats<\/a>, would make.<\/p> <p>Mr Belinksy was perfectly reasonable.  He suggested some items from their present wares; he respected and even sympathized with my discomfort with fur felts. (In fact, his remarks made me more inclined to think that someone might make a go of a business that made fur felts without the animals having been killed or injured to collect the <span style=\"white-space: nowrap ;\">fur.<span style=\"vertical-align: top ; font-size: smaller ;\">&#91;1&#93;<\/span><\/span>) Further, he thanked me for expressing my desires, and asserted that, indeed, such requests were factored into the decisions as to what to make.  When he learned that I had quite liked <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20091016180841\/http:\/\/www.villagehatshop.com\/jaxon_crushable-hat_safari.html\">a now officially discountinued hat<\/a>, he made a check in the back room to see if he could find one for me. (Tragically, he found one in each of the <em>other<\/em> two colors, but not the grey that would go with my suits.)<\/p> <p>Before I spoke with Mr Belinsky, I'd found a hat that I wanted to get for my mother.  Mr Belinsky was kind enough to give me a Jaxon baseball cap as a lagniappe with that purchase.<\/p> <p>And, as I was checking-out, Mr Belinsky amus&egrave;dly brought-over another customer, who had just asked for a hat of very similar description to that which I'd requested.<\/p> <hr width=\"50%\" align=\"left\" \/> <p><span style=\"white-space: nowrap ;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: top ; font-size: smaller ;\">[1]<\/span><?span> No, I <em>wouldn't<\/em> want to call it <q>the Shaved Beaver Felt Firm<\/q>.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I had a brief but very pleasant conversation this morning with Fred Belinsky, owner of the Village Hat Shop.
