{"id":111,"date":"2008-04-30T00:21:21","date_gmt":"2008-04-30T08:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=111"},"modified":"2009-09-23T19:08:30","modified_gmt":"2009-09-24T03:08:30","slug":"and-nybble-away","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oeconomist.com\/blogs\/daniel\/?p=111","title":{"rendered":"And nybble away"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In various user environments, with various mouses, if one is highlighting within a text field by dragging the mouse from left-to-right, and then moves the mouse just <em>slightly<\/em> upward, then the highlighting is switched to running <em>left<\/em>ward from the original cursor position; similarly, if one is highlighting by dragging leftward, and then moves the mouse just slightly downward, then the highlighting is switched to running rightward.<\/p> <p>I've observed this behaviour in Linux <abbr title=\"graphic user interface\">GUI<\/abbr>s and in the Windows XP native <abbr title=\"graphic user interface\">GUI<\/abbr>; <a href=\"http:\/\/mocketymock.com\/\">the Woman of Interest<\/a> tested for me and found this behavior in <abbr title=\"Macintosh\">Mac<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"Operating System\">OS<\/abbr> X 10.4.  I think that such behaviour is widely standard.<\/p> <p>I don't know <em>why<\/em> mouse software is programmed thus.  I don't know why anyone would want a <em>small<\/em> gesture, easily made by <em>accident<\/em>, to switch the selection from one set to its complement.  In the event of such an accident, if the mouse button has been released then, at the least, one must repeat the highlighting procedure.<\/p> <p>In my case, I have <em>repeatedly<\/em> made such a gesture by accident.  In releasing the mouse, so that I can use my right hand to type, I frequently give it a <em>tiny<\/em> forward push.
